State of the KernelJon C. Masters (jcm@jonmasters.org)The most recent Linux kernel release included contributions from over 1,000 individual developers, and the pace remains as brisk as ever, with developers working closely alongside subsystem and tree maintainers to get new features ready for prime time use. There have been many successes, and some heated debates, as well as a continuing effort to hunt down regressions and bugs. For all the activity, it can be hard to keep in mind the bigger overall picture of the direction of the Linux kernel and its community as a whole. The keynote draws its inspiration from the many hundreds of hours spent over the past year producing and recording the Linux Kernel Podcast, a semi-weekly digest of overall kernel development and community activity, aimed at making the kernel more accessible both to kernel developers as well as those with a general interest in day-to-day activities. A summary of the past year's achivements (and debates) will proceed some insights into future direction, finally ending with some commentary on what it is like trying to summarize the daily activity on the kernel mailing list. |
