Open Source Governance: An Approach.

Over the past decade we have seen Open Source Software (OSS) usage progress from the operating system (Linux), to an OSS stack; from there to an Open Source Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and to most recently Cloud implementations based on the use of Open Source Software. Use of Open Source Software brings benefits, but its use also brings responsibilities. The benefits come in the form of lowering the entry cost of software, increasing productivity and functionality in applications. The responsibilities come in two forms: 1) Contractual obligations in the form of End User License Agreements (EULAs) and 2) Open Source community responsibility. The first is a legal requirement; the second an ethical obligation.

Governance models allow businesses to manage the risks versus rewards equation. This talk will focus on the reasons for having a Governance model and an approach that can be taken to help minimize risk.
