Linux UDP Performance Tuning

TCP is the most widely used IP transport protocol due to its built-in reliability features such as flow-control and automatic retransmission. But there are surprisingly many applications relying on UDP instead. This is due to the fact that UDP is lightweight and supports multicasting.

There are many papers describing the performance tuning of Linux networking stack but they mostly concentrate on TCP and NIC-drivers. Many of these recommendations are applicable to all networking protocols but there are UDP-specific tunings as well. In particular, as there is no flow-control on the kernel level, more work needs to be done on application level, in userspace. As a result, application should be designed properly and it is very important to deliver datagrams to applications as soon as possible, without loss or delay. In this paper we describe Linux UDP performance tuning and some applications that might benefit from such a tuning.
