Android - The Bait and Switch OS

Tim Riker (tim@rikers.org)

Tim has been working on launching the Saygus Vphone. This is an Android device with many new features not found on other Android devices currently on the market. Android is a compelling platform to use on a smart phone as it is Linux based, Open Source, and uses the popular Java language for application development. This presentation will cover our experience working with this allegedly Open Source operating system. In short, Android has not (yet?) succeeded in breaking down the cellular silos, in fact it has created a few of its own. If you use Linux in part because of the freedom it offers you, beware that this same freedom does not yet extend to the computer that you use as your phone.
