Online Hierarchical Storage Manager (OHSM) for LINUX

The Linux kernel has developed into an Enterprise quality kernel with well defined and stable ABIs. One feature still missing which high-end Enterprise operating systems have historically had is a Hierarchical Storage Manager (HSM). In recent years HSM systems have been out of favor in the Enterprise because the cost of the storage tiers has been relatively similar. With the advent of high performance / high cost SSDs, there is again a significant relative cost difference between the storage tiers.

OHSM is an open implementation of a enterprise quality HSM that leverages the modern linux kernel. In particular the device mapper, dmraid, elevator, and block layers are all leveraged with little or no changes to their existing implementation. OHSM patches the filesystem code in a minimal way to allow such functions as block allocations from the preferred tier for each file and to track file usage or hotness. More significant kernel code is provided to implement movement of files from one tier to another. In proper Linux tradition, much of the control code and all policies are implemented via user space applications and daemons.
