SMB2 File System: A new default network file system?

The SMB2 protocol is the default file system protocol used by newer Windows clients and servers, and contains new features that make it better suited for Linux than its predecessor (SMB and CIFS). With the release of the WSPP documentation for SMB2 and related protocols, it is now possible to implement this rich protocol more completely, and a prototype SMB2 file system has been developed by the author for Linux, working with other members of the Samba team, and an SMB2 server implementation is now part of Samba as well. The SMB2 protocol has a surprisingly rich set of features, which are interesting to compare side by side with the features of other network file system protocols such as the NFS version 4.1 protocol.

This paper describes the strengths and weaknesses of the SMB2 protocol, as well as of the latest NFS version protocol version. It also describes the suitability of the protocols for Linux, and the current state of the implementations.
