Active Idle: A power management framework for handheldsSujith Thomas (sujith.thomas@intel.com)Power management for handhelds is a relatively new but important topic in the industry with each solution being implemented in a proprietary way. In the past most of the solutions have been migrated from a PC world where the power management revolves around the CPU. The "suspend/resume" framework in the Linux is primarily not meant for low-latency platform states and is not tied up with CPUIDLE. The next generation handhelds supports low latency-low power states which can bring down the entire platform to very low power upon user/CPU inactivity. Some solutions in this space today include the Android PM framework, the clock framework for ARM-based handhelds, etc. The existing Linux kernel requires a unified framework to control and direct platform-wide power management by utilizing existing components like CPUIDLE, clock framework, etc. In this paper, we first propose an active idle power management state that spans cpu, devices and other subsytems and propose a framework that (1) interacts with other existing components like CPUIDLE, clock framework, etc. 2) An user space component which collects data from multiple software stacks and triggers the kernel to switch into active idle low power modes through the ACTIVE IDLE framework. 3) Kernel space governors which manages decision on Active idle state transitions. 4) Platform specific kernel driver which exposes the available low latency, low power active idle states and guides the platform to such states.
