Tricks of the Trade: Learning Kernel Hacking from clever people
Thanks to the efforts of various projects aimed at newcomers, starting kernel hacking is no longer as daunting as it once was. However there is less coverage of the techniques experienced kernel developers use on a day to day basis to streamline their work. In this session I will present a grab bag of tricks of the trade I've learned from my own modest coding efforts, observing colleagues at OzLabs and chatting with folk in the broader community - the clever people :)
I've recently been porting support for a couple of PowerPC embedded boards from arch/ppc to arch/powerpc. While this would be a relatively minor task for an experienced kernel hacker, it has been quite a learning process for me. I've been fortunate enough to be able to draw on the experience of a number of seasoned hackers in this process and believe the things I've learnt would be of wide interest.
This will be a fairly informal session with plenty of demonstrations of the tips and techniques in question.
