Zumastor Linux Storage Server

Daniel Phillips (phillips@google.com)

Zumastor provides Linux with network storage functionality suited to a medium scale enterprise storage role: live volume backup, remote volume replication, user accessible volume snapshots and integration with Kerberized network filesystems.

This paper examines the design and functionality of the system components of Zumastor, paying attention to server performance optimization using NVRAM, and reducing remote replication  bandwidth requirements using compression and binary differencing. Future optimization strategies are discussed and benchmark results are presented.
