Adopting & commenting the old kernel source code for educational purpose

Disecting older kernels including their problems can be educational and an entertaining review of where we have been. In this session, we examine the older linux kernel version 0.11(0.95) as I have done in my recently published free book "A Heavily Commented Linux kernel Source Code (Kernel 0.11)" and discuss some of my findings. First, we explain the reasons for selecting the kernel over current kernel versions which is mainly because of the large amount of source code in more current kernel versions. Since the kernel v0.11 has only 14,000 lines of code, we can easily describe it in detail and perform some meaningful experiments with a runnable system in a short period of time. We then examine several aspects of the kernel including the memory management, interrupt mechanism, the system timer, states, initialization, creating a process, scheduling and terminating of a process in the Linux kernel. Next we review the stack usage in the kernel. finally, we present and describe the structure of the linux kernel source including the lib/ directory.
