Proposal for a new kernel level wireless configuration interface

James Ketrenos (james.p.ketrenos@intel.com)

This BOF will provide a forum for discussing the evolution of the wireless configuration interface used by the Linux kernel. This includes topics covering the current state of the wireless extension interface, an overview of some of the proposals that have been made on various forums for improving or replacing that interface, and a discussion of the goals and requirements motivating the requested changes.

A proposal will be provided for an improved wireless configuration interface that will meet the current needs with a design structured to handle emerging IEEE 802.11 wireless standards. This new interface is intended to behave similar in form and function to that used by ethernet adapters, with a sub-goal of being able to be used by existing wireless tools and applications in a backward compatible manner.
