How to help penguin get up quickly after a fall?

Linux is a highly reliable operating system but unfortunately the kernel still fails. Sometimes failures are due to hardware components and others are due to exercising the new code paths in the kernel. Linux in some respects is now becoming a victim of its own success: used in more workloads than ever before and expectations for responses to failures are rising rapidly. This BOF would like to discuss various techniques for capturing failure information and diagnosing problems quickly, thus allowing the workload to resume with a minimal interruption. In particular the BOF organizers will present some case studies of real failures at customer sites, difficulties in diagnosing such failures and propose some improvements. The audience will be invited to share their experiences and recommendations for improving failure analysis. Based on these experiences requirements and proposed solutions for failure analysis will be gathered. The suggested solutions can be used to drive projects in the community for future Linux releases.
