RAS BoF Part1 - Logging macros, printk and diagnostics
Following the successful RAS BoFs at last year's symposium a significant thread was initiated on lkml reagrding the use of printk and logging. This discussion resulted in the creation of the dev_printk macros and their inclusion into the 2.5 kernel; this is a starting point for improving logging instrumentation. In order to prepare Linux for advanced systems management such as automated device diagnostics and recovery we need to build on the dev_printk scheme. Issues such as message consistency, correctness and data standardisation among drivers and the kernel needs to be discussed; dev_printk is a start - how should this be extended to other parts of the kernel? Are there other needs to be satisfied when considering rationalizing logging within the kernel? This BoF will be lead by Richard J Moore and Larry Kessler from the IBM Linux Technology Centre.
