2003 Linux Symposium: faq

Q. Why was OLS started?

A. In April 1999 it appeared that the grass roots Linux enthusiast conferences were vanishing. The highly commercial marketing oriented shows that were replacing them seems utterly devoid of challenging high end content. So, in a 4am fit of madness, planning for the first OLS began.

Q. I am not an uber-hacker, will be be out of place?

A. Many of our attendees are kernel hackers; but the event is for all active Linux enthusiasts; hackers, and system administrators. You should however take a quick look at the content from last year year. The speaker list of this year will start appearing shortly after Feb 15th.

Q. How big is it?

A. The best answer is; just the right size. The main objective of the Symposium is to bring together active participants in the Linux community and to promote open discussion. We feel that by keeping the number around 500 in total this objective is best served.

Q. Is there a mailing list?

Q. I am in high-school, does the student rate still apply?

A.Yes.

Q. How much does it cost?

A. All the non-CAD prices are approximations. If you are a student and register early it is $199.00CAD (133USD), and $325.00CAD (217.55USD) if you wait until late registration. For non-students it is $325.00CAD (217.55USD) and $500.00CAD (334.69USD) if you wait until late registration. Late registration begins May 2nd, and will only be available assuming we do not sell out prior to May. All prices include 7% Goods & Services Tax "GST").

Q. When does early registration end?

A.The final day to get the early registration price is May 1st. Your cheque must be postmarked prior to May 1st to get the price. If you send it on May 2nd you'll still owe some.

Q. What is the legal drinking age in Canada?

A. In Ontario (the provice that Ottawa is in) the legal drinking age is 19.
