Linux in the pocket - The Linux-7k projectSo far, there was one white spot on the Linux map of world domination: Linux wasn't really there on palmtops. Even the smallest i386-based notebooks are still too big for most pockets, and real hackers will miss the keyboard on the PalmPilot (uClinux). In spring '98, the Linux-7k project was started with the goal of porting Linux to the Geofox One and Psion S5 palmtops. Now, about one year later, the Psion part of the port is almost ready for everyday use, with the Geofox part following closely. Many text-based Linux applications (vi, Perl, etc.) run right from a RedHat distribution, TCP/IP networking is possible using SLIP, there is power-saving, and people have started work on light-weight GUIs for PDAs. This presentation will give a brief overview of the Psion S5 hardware, the project history and its status, typical considerations when porting Linux to this type of machine, and an outlook of future work in this area.
